actionpre-camp checklist

things to do before camp:

  • Please make sure that you’re in good physical shape- this will prevent injuries and make your camp experience much more enjoyable
  • Think about your objectives during your visit so that you can communicate this with your coach on arrival- be realistic about your goals, but challenge yourself.
  • Please make send us your waiver, travel and medical information
  • Please inform us of any special needs, medication, dietary restrictions, rooming requests, rental requirements, etc in advance so that we can accommodate you to the best of our ability.
  • Please look over the rules and regulations listed below.

actionpacking list

  1. Your equipment and winter snow wear including goggles, gloves, helmets and hats. It helps to have a spare pair of gloves, as wet gloves are not fun. If you have spring gloves, bring those, too. Layers are recommended, as weather conditions can rapidly change on the glacier. Most campers will take a back-pack onto the glacier and leave it at the tent. This allows you to adjust layers throughout the day.
  2. Summer snow clothing such as a lighter jacket, sweatshirt, sunglasses, sunscreen, and hat.
  3. Rainwear for all activities.
  4. Bathing suit
  5. Your regular clothing and sportswear. Please note that we have a coin-operated laundry facility at the Tantalus Lodge.
  6. Sunscreen!
  7. Your water bottle and backpack to bring extra clothing etc. up the hill.
  8. Camera to capture all those good times-- and remember--we ARE making a video of the camp.
  9. A calling card so that you can keep in touch with the folks at home.
  10. Extra spending money for snacks and gifts.
  11. We will need to be informed of any medications that campers take.

travel information

Please plan your flights into Vancouver International Airport for arrival/departure between 11 am and 3 pm. Please notify us if you are planning on having children sent as “unaccompanied minors” – there is often an additional charge through the airlines for arrivals and/or departures. Please verify this with your airline.

Airport Arrivals: We will have our easily identifiable staff waiting at the Domestic and International Arrival Gates (just outside of customs), as well as at the Elephant and Castle Restaurant from 11 am to 3 pm each Friday.

If you are driving to camp: Whistler is approximately 2 hours north of Vancouver. Please join us at the Tantalus Lodge at 4200 Whistler Way. For those staying with us at the hotel, we ask you to please time your arrival for between 5-6 pm on Friday night as our Welcome Night festivities will start sometime around 7pm.

how to get to tantalus lodge:

Follow Highway 99 North to Whistler until you reach Village Gate Blvd. - turn right into village. Take first right at lights onto Whistler Way. Continue along Whistler Way to Tantalus Resort Lodge - the last property on the left.

Departures: Our camp bus generally leaves Whistler around 7 am, and arrives at Vancouver International Airport at approx. 10 am, pending traffic conditions. Most airlines require travelers to check in at least 2 hours prior to departure. Please keep this in mind when booking your flights.

information for multiple week campers:

If you’ll be staying with us for more than one camp, Friday will be a rest day. Our private area on the glacier will be closed for maintenance, and campers will spend the day off-hill with a staff member.

demos/rentals

We have our demos available in the counselor’s room from 7 to 9 pm, starting on Saturday. You are welcome to stop in and get set up to try out the latest gear. Demos are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, and are only to be used for a day.
If you require rental equipment, please let us know in advance to we can make sure that you are set up. The price of rentals varies depending on the type of gear that you require, but will generally cost around $35CAD per day. Sorry, demos can’t be replaced with rentals – we simply don’t have enough to go around.

money, money, money

It is always a good idea to have some Canadian money on hand for incidentals and gifts. Our campers generally spend $10-20 Cdn per day.

Most stores in Whistler will take US funds, however the exchange rate will vary. There are a variety of places to exchange money in Whistler. Traveler’s cheques are also

camp policies

Over the years our camp has prided itself in mutual trust developed between the campers and the staff.

We operate on a free and open system of supervision, but if rules are broken, then staff and campers talk SERIOUSLY to resolve the problem. We’re all here for a good time and for that reason, certain common sense rules must be followed. We look forward to a great, fun-filled camp!

  1. Possession or consumption of illegal drugs or alcohol will not be tolerated. We have a 100% no-tolerance policy. Parents will be called and offending campers sent home without refund.
  2. The hotel accommodation must be respected as though it is your own home. If the room or contents are damaged in any way, the damage will be charged to the campers, and in the case of willful damage, the offender will be dismissed from camp. There will be an additional charge if extra housekeeping is required for filthy rooms.
  3. Campers must be in their assigned rooms by 10 pm and during the evening room checks unless the camp supervisor gives specific permission.
  4. Any behavior considered as a safety hazard to self or others will not be permitted, and may result in campers being sent home.
  5. The camp will not take responsibility for any lost or stolen valuables or equipment.
  6. No refunds will apply to campers sent home for violation of camp rules. Parents or guardians will be contacted and the individual will be sent home at the parents’ expense as soon as the travel arrangements can be made.
